I’m David, owner of David’s Urgent Garage Door in St. Louis Park. Hinges are a small part people rarely look at, but on older Twin Cities doors they’re often the reason a door shakes, cracks a panel, or comes off the track. Road salt rusts the bottom hinges first, and a cracked hinge at the top usually means the opener has been pulling on a door that’s out of balance.
Signs a garage door hinge is failing
- A crack in the hinge, or a hinge bent so the sections don’t line up.
- The door bows or bends near the top when the opener pulls it.
- Loose or stripped screws where the hinge mounts to the door, or the steel around them torn.
- Rollers wobbling or sitting crooked in the track.
- Heavy rust on the bottom hinges and brackets.
- Popping or cracking sounds at the same spot every time the door bends over the curve.

Why hinge numbers matter
The side hinges on a sectional door are numbered (usually #1 at the bottom, then #2, #3 and up). Each higher number sets the roller a little farther from the door so the door seals tight against the frame as it closes. Putting the wrong number in a spot makes the door rub, gap or bind. I match each replacement to its position, and the center hinges are replaced to match too.
How I replace garage door hinges
- Close the door and check spring balance first. The bottom hinge area and bottom brackets are under spring tension and are never loosened by hand.
- Replace one hinge at a time so the sections stay supported.
- Install the correct numbered hinge, with new rollers where the old ones are worn.
- Repair stripped mounting holes with the right fasteners or a reinforcement plate.
- Re-align the tracks if needed, balance the door, then test the opener force and safety reverse.
If a hinge cracked because the top of the door is bending, a reinforcement strut on the top section stops it from happening again, especially on wide double doors. If the section itself is torn, see panel replacement.
Cost
Hinge replacement is usually a small repair, often done together with roller replacement or a tune-up. You get the exact price on site before any work starts, with a 1-year labor warranty. Rough numbers: repair cost calculator.
Hinge FAQ
Can I replace a garage door hinge myself?
Middle and upper hinges can be replaced by a careful homeowner with the door closed. Never touch the bottom hinge area, the bottom brackets, cables or springs; they hold the full spring tension.
Why did my top hinge crack?
Usually the opener is pulling a door that is out of balance or binding, or the top section has no strut. Fix the cause, or the new hinge will crack too. See balance adjustment.
Should hinges be lubricated?
Yes, a light garage-door lubricant on the hinge pivots and rollers once or twice a year, especially before winter. Don’t grease the tracks.
Cracked hinge or door bowing?
Owner-operated, family-owned since 2019, serving St. Louis Park, Edina, Minnetonka, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Plymouth and the whole Twin Cities.
