Garage door cables are the two steel ropes that run from the bottom corners of the door up to the drums on the torsion bar. The springs make the lifting force; the cables are what actually carry it to the door. When one lets go you usually hear a bang, then the door sits crooked – one side up, one side down – or it will not move at all.

Why garage door cables fail in Minnesota

On most of our calls the cable did not “wear out” evenly. It rusted through at the bottom. Every winter your car drags salty slush into the garage, it melts on the slab, and that salt water sits exactly where the cable wraps around the bottom bracket. The bottom bracket rusts, the last foot of cable rusts, and one cold morning it snaps. The same puddle is why the bottom rollers seize up and why the vertical tracks pit and flake. So when David replaces cables he checks all of it – brackets, bottom rollers, the lower track – not just the cable.

What a cable job looks like

David unplugs the opener, secures the door, and winds the spring tension down so the drums can be released. Both cables come off, the bottom brackets and rollers are inspected, and anything rusted is replaced while the door is already apart – usually a new pair of galvanized cables and, on older doors, new bottom brackets and nylon rollers. Then the cables are re-wound on the drums, tension is set, and the door is balanced so it stays put halfway open. If the door jumped its rails during the failure, it is put back on track in the same visit (off-track repair). Bent or rusted track from the same failure is straightened or replaced too (track repair & alignment).

Signs your cables are about to go

• The door lifts unevenly or one side sits lower when closed.
• You can see loose strands or rust-colored fraying near the bottom bracket.
• A cable hangs slack or has jumped its drum.
• The door slams the last few inches or bounces when it hits the floor.
• Grinding from the bottom corners – often a seized roller taking the cable with it.

Any of these is a good reason for a tune-up before the cable snaps in January. Cables are cheap; a door that drops off its track is not.

Can I just replace the one cable that snapped?

You can, but we almost never recommend it. Cables wear as a pair, and in Minnesota the rust that took the first one is already working on the second. Replacing both takes a few extra minutes and saves you a second service call in the same winter.

How much does garage door cable replacement cost in Minneapolis-St. Paul?

Cable repair usually runs $100 to $200 for parts and labor. If the bottom brackets are rusted through or the door came off its track, the visit costs more – David quotes the full number on site before touching anything.

Is it safe to keep using the door with one cable snapped?

No. With one cable gone the whole load sits on the other side, the door hangs crooked, and the opener will try to drag it. Disconnect the opener, leave the door where it is, and call. It is the same advice we give for an off-track door.

Why do cables in Minnesota fail at the bottom?

Road salt. Snow melts off the car onto the slab, the salty water sits against the bottom bracket and the last few inches of cable, and they rust. That is also why rollers seize and why the vertical track pits and rusts – it all starts in the same puddle.
