I’m David, owner of David’s Urgent Garage Door in St. Louis Park. I do the work myself on every job. Track problems are some of the most common calls I get in Minnesota, and almost every one of them started small: a loose bracket, a dented section of track, a rusty roller that stopped turning. Caught early, it’s a simple repair. Left alone, the door comes off the track, and that’s a bigger job.
Signs your garage door track needs repair
- The door scrapes, grinds or jerks in one spot on the way up or down.
- There’s a visible gap between a roller and the track, or the track is bowed or dented.
- The door hangs crooked, or one side moves ahead of the other.
- Brackets holding the track to the wall or ceiling are loose, bent or missing bolts.
- Rust on the bottom of the vertical tracks and the bottom brackets (very common here because of road salt).
- A roller has already popped out of the track. If that happened, read what to do when the door is off track first.

What causes track damage in Minnesota
The bottom two feet of a garage door take the most punishment here. Road salt and slush sit on the bottom brackets, rollers and the lower part of the vertical tracks all winter, and the rust makes rollers seize and tracks pit. A roller that doesn’t turn drags along the track instead of rolling, and over time it bends the track or jumps out. The other usual causes are a car bumping the track, a snapped cable that lets one side drop (see cable replacement), and brackets that loosen from years of vibration.
How I repair and align garage door tracks
- Secure the door first. A door with a damaged track is under spring tension and can fall. I clamp it before touching anything.
- Find the real cause. Bent track, loose bracket, seized roller, broken hinge, snapped cable or worn spring. Fixing only the track when a cable caused it means a callback.
- Straighten or replace. Small bends can be straightened. Track that is kinked, cracked or rusted through gets replaced.
- Align and fasten. Vertical tracks set plumb with the right gap to the door, horizontal tracks level, jamb and flag brackets tightened into solid framing.
- Rollers and hinges. Seized or cracked rollers swapped for sealed-bearing nylon rollers, bent hinges replaced (see hinge replacement).
- Balance and test. Cables and springs checked, the door balanced by hand, then the opener force and safety reverse tested.
Repair or replace the track?
Most of the time the track can be repaired. I replace it when the metal is creased, cracked, or rusted thin at the bottom, or when the wrong track was installed for your headroom (for low ceilings, see low-headroom doors and track radius). If the door itself is badly damaged, I’ll tell you honestly whether a panel replacement or a new door makes more sense.
How much does garage door track repair cost?
It depends on what’s damaged: re-aligning and tightening a track is a small job, while new track sections, rollers and cables cost more. You get an exact price on site before any work begins, and every repair carries a 1-year labor warranty. For a rough idea before you call, try the repair cost calculator.
Safe things you can check yourself
- With the door closed, look for loose bolts on the track brackets. Snug them if they’re just loose; don’t loosen anything.
- Wipe dirt and old grease out of the tracks. Tracks don’t need grease; rollers and hinges get a light garage-door lubricant.
- Do not try to bend a track back with the door open, and never touch the springs, cables or bottom brackets. They hold the full weight of the door.
- Not sure what’s wrong? Use the garage door troubleshooter.
Garage door track repair FAQ
Can I keep using my garage door if the track is bent?
No. A bent track can let a roller jump out and the door can drop or jam. Disconnect the opener or just stop using it, and call for a repair.
How long does a track repair take?
Most track repairs and alignments are finished in one visit, usually the same day you call.
Why does my garage door shake or scrape on one side?
Usually a track that’s out of alignment, a seized roller, or a loose bracket on that side. Less often, a frayed cable on that side is letting the door tilt.
Do you repair tracks on emergencies, nights and weekends?
Yes. I answer 24/7. No surcharge on weekend daytime calls; a night surcharge applies only after 9 PM. See 24-hour emergency repair.
Track rubbing, door crooked, roller out?
Owner-operated, family-owned since 2019, serving St. Louis Park, Edina, Minnetonka, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Plymouth and the whole Twin Cities.
