Real off-track and emergency jobs

The tracks are an essential part of a garage door system. These metal tracks allow the rollers of your overhead garage door to move a door that weighs hundreds of pounds smoothly and easily. When maintained, garage door tracks can last for many years, but they are prone to damage and wear, which can cause your door to slip off track. If you have a garage door off track emergency in the Minneapolis metropolitan area, you can trust David’s Urgent Garage Door for a same-day repair.
Garage Door Track Repair
Garage door tracks need to allow enough room for the rollers to move easily. If the tracks are too tight or dented, the rollers can bind and stick, making it hard to open and close the door. This often occurs when a vehicle hits the track, bending the metal. A tight track can place excessive wear on your garage door opener motor and other components.
The other concern with garage door tracks is a loose or broken track. This can be a dangerous situation. When the tracks are loose, the garage door can fall off the track. The door may land on a vehicle or worse, may be a hazard to you or your family. It is important to never try to fix or realign a garage door on your own. You need a garage door specialist to safely fix your tracks and door.

Wondering how doors end up off their rails in the first place? Read why it happens and why you should never force the door. Off-track doors often involve a broken spring or a worn cable drum — David checks all three on every call.
Hinges, Bottom Brackets and Rusted Vertical Track
Not every off-track call starts with a dent. On Twin Cities doors the quiet cause is rust: road salt drips off the car and sits on the bottom brackets, the lower rollers and the bottom couple of feet of the vertical track. The bracket that anchors the lift cable rusts thin, the roller stem seizes, and one day the door twists on the way up and a roller pops out. David checks all three on every track visit and replaces bottom brackets and rusted track sections rather than bending them back – a bracket that has rusted through is also what lets a cable let go.
Hinges matter too. A cracked or loose hinge between sections lets a roller sit at the wrong angle, so the door binds at the same spot every cycle and eventually jumps the track. Replacing a hinge or two and tightening the rest is a small job that prevents an emergency, and it is part of a tune-up. If your door is stopping partway or shaking on the way up, that is the warning sign: see why a garage door stops halfway.
Related reading: why a garage door jumps its track – and why forcing it makes it worse, and what a snapped cable does to a door (the most common cause we see). Cable and drum replacement is covered on its own page.
Who does the work? David Tuito, the owner – licensed and insured in Minnesota, and the person in every photo on this site. More about David.
Related symptom: a door that stops at the same spot every time usually has a dented track, a loose hinge or a roller about to jump – catching it there is far cheaper than an off-track call.
