Garage door panels – the horizontal sections the door is built from – get damaged three ways in the Twin Cities: someone backs into the bottom section, a storm or a snowplow throws something into it, or the bottom panel rusts and rots from the inside out after years of salt water sitting against it. A damaged panel is not just cosmetic: a bent section binds in the tracks, strains the opener and springs, and a rusted bottom panel will not hold the weather seal or the bottom bracket that the cables pull on.
Repair one panel or replace the door?
This is the decision every panel call comes down to, and David will give you a straight answer instead of a sales pitch. Replacing a single section makes sense when the door is a current model, the rest of the door is sound, and the damage is limited to one or two panels. A new door makes more sense when panels are discontinued, several are damaged, the door is already 15-20 years old with rust at the bottom and tired hardware, or you were thinking about insulation anyway. The Minnesota problem: bottom panels that rust out
Most panel calls that are not accidents are the bottom section. Salty slush runs off the car, sits along the bottom edge, and rusts the steel skin from the inside – you see bubbling paint first, then flaking, then holes. The bottom bracket that carries the cable load is bolted to that panel; when the steel around it goes soft the bracket can tear out, which is a cable and off-track failure waiting to happen. If the rust is only in the bottom panel, replacing that one section (with new brackets, seal retainer and bottom seal) buys a sound door many more years. If it has climbed into the second panel, it is a new-door conversation.
What a panel replacement involves
- Identify the door – manufacturer, model, panel style, color and insulation from the label inside the door.
- Order the section – a factory-matched panel; lead time is usually a few days to two weeks.
- Swap it – David releases spring tension, unbolts the hinges and hardware from the damaged section, slides it out of the tracks, fits the new one, and moves over the hinges, rollers and (on a bottom section) the brackets and seal.
- Re-balance and test – spring tension, opener force limits and safety sensors are checked so the repaired door runs smoothly.
Do not do this
Do not keep running a door with a badly bent panel; each cycle spreads the damage to the hinges and track. Do not try to hammer a dent out of an insulated section – the skin is thin and the foam behind it does not move. And do not unbolt a bottom panel yourself: the springs and cables are attached to it and under full tension.

Can you replace just one panel of my garage door?
Often, yes – if the door is a common current model and the manufacturer still makes that section. David checks the label on the inside of the door, orders the matching panel, and swaps it. On doors older than about 10-15 years the panel may be discontinued; then the honest options are a close match, a used section, or a new door.
How much does garage door panel replacement cost in the Twin Cities?

Will a new panel match the color of my old door?
A factory panel in the same color will be close but usually not identical – the old panels have faded. On a white door it is rarely noticeable; on dark or wood-look doors the difference can show. David will tell you honestly before ordering.
