Garage Door Opener Repairs
You rely on your garage door to provide easy access to your garage. It can be easy to take your door opener for granted and you may not realize how much you depend on it until it does not work. When you are met with silence when you try to open your garage door, your opener may be the problem. Some common reasons for door opener failure include:
- Power supply issues
- Sprocket and gear problems
- Motor problems
- Opener needs reprogramming
Many garage door opener problems are easily fixed. You may need a new battery in the remote or a simple reprogramming. If you have a newer garage door opener, most likely it can be fixed. David’s Urgent Garage Door can come to your home the same day to inspect your garage door opener and recommend repair or replacement options.
If you need a garage door opener repair or replacement in the Twin Cities, Call us at David’s Urgent Garage Door. We provide garage door opener service in Eden Prairie, Edina, Wayzata, St. Louis Park, and Excelsior, as well as throughout the greater Minneapolis metro area.
Not sure the opener is the real problem? Start with the 8 most common reasons a garage door won’t open. Choosing a new unit? See the LiftMaster myQ lineup guide. And since worn gears and sprockets are a frequent culprit inside older openers, David replaces those too.
Which LiftMaster do we install? Three current Security+ 3.0 models – the Premium 6690L (belt drive, battery backup, 360° camera, 2,000-lumen light ring), the Plus 6580L (belt drive, battery backup, camera) and the Basic 2220L (DC chain drive, camera). Compare the three LiftMaster openers here.
Choosing or troubleshooting an opener? Start with which LiftMaster myQ opener fits your garage, then smart openers, HomeLink and EV-charging garages. If the motor runs but nothing moves, it is often the gear – see gear and sprocket repair – and if the door will not open at all, these seven causes cover most calls.
Who installs it? David Tuito, the owner. Every opener on this site was installed by David himself. About David’s Urgent Garage Door.
Door starts to close and then goes back up? That is the safety sensors – or, on an opener older than 10-15 years, very often the logic board. Both are covered on garage door won’t close: sensor and logic board repair.
Opener symptom guides: the opener hums but the door will not move, the remote or keypad has stopped working, or the door opens by itself – each one walks through the causes in the order David checks them on a driveway.
Garage door opener FAQ
My garage door opener hums but the door does not move. What is wrong?
Usually the motor is fine and something between it and the door has let go: a stripped main drive gear (the most common failure on older chain-drive units), a worn sprocket, a snapped belt or chain, or the trolley has been disconnected by the red cord. If the door is also very heavy to lift by hand, the real cause is a broken spring and the opener was never the problem. We walk through the checks in our opener-hums guide, and David can usually fix it on the first visit.
Should I repair my garage door opener or replace it?
Repair when the unit is under about 10 to 12 years old and the fault is a gear, sprocket, safety sensor, logic board or remote - those are quick, inexpensive fixes. Replace when the opener is 15 years or older, has no safety sensors at all (pre-1993 units), needs a logic board that is no longer made, or the repair estimate gets close to the cost of a new LiftMaster myQ opener installed. David gives you both numbers on site so you can decide.
How much does a new garage door opener cost installed in Minneapolis-St. Paul?
Installed LiftMaster myQ openers run from about $650 to $1,500 depending on the model (chain-drive 2220L, belt-drive 6580L, premium 6690L with camera and battery backup). The price includes removing the old opener, the new rail and safety sensors, remote and keypad programming, and setting the door's balance and travel limits. The exact price is quoted before any work starts, and an opener installed together with a new garage door is cheaper than the two jobs done separately.
Which opener is best if there is a bedroom above the garage?
A belt-drive model. The LiftMaster 6580L and 6690L run on a steel-reinforced belt instead of a chain, so there is no rattle through the ceiling, and both have battery backup so the door still opens in a Minnesota power outage. If the garage has low headroom or a cathedral ceiling, the wall-mount LiftMaster 98022 mounts beside the door and removes the rail from the ceiling entirely.
The wall button works but my remote and keypad are dead. Do I need a new opener?
Almost never. Nine times out of ten someone has bumped the LOCK (vacation) button on the wall console, which disables every remote and keypad on purpose - hold it for two seconds and they come back. After that it is batteries, reprogramming, or LED bulbs in the opener interfering with the signal. The full checklist is in our remote and keypad guide.
Do you repair openers that are not LiftMaster?
Yes. David repairs Chamberlain, Craftsman, Genie, Linear, Overhead Door and most other brands - gears, sprockets, safety sensors, logic boards, travel limits and force settings. The one limit is parts: for very old units whose boards are no longer made, replacement is the honest answer, and he will say so.
What warranty comes with an opener installation?
Every opener we install carries a 1-year labor warranty from David plus LiftMaster's manufacturer warranty on the unit itself (lifetime on the motor for the models we install; the per-model belt, parts and accessory terms are on our LiftMaster page). Repairs on any brand get the same 1-year labor warranty. Family-owned, owner-operated, MN #IR790255.
