I’m David, owner of David’s Urgent Garage Door in St. Louis Park. “How long will this take?” is one of the first things people ask on the phone, usually because the car is stuck inside. Here’s what to expect, from the call to the finished door, with typical times for the common repairs. Every door is different, so these are typical ranges, not promises.
Typical repair times
| Repair | Typical time on site |
|---|---|
| Broken torsion spring (pair replaced, door balanced) | About 1 to 1.5 hours |
| Cable replacement | About 1 hour |
| Door off track (reset, cables, rollers) | About 1.5 to 3 hours |
| Track repair & alignment | About 1 to 2 hours |
| Roller or hinge replacement | About 1 hour |
| Safety sensors or opener gear | About 30 minutes to 1.5 hours |
| Tune-up with balance check | About 45 minutes to 1 hour |

What makes a repair take longer
- More than one failure at once, for example a spring that broke and pulled a cable off the drum.
- Rust. In Minnesota, bottom brackets and fasteners are often rusted solid from road salt.
- An odd-size spring or door that needs a part that isn’t on the truck.
- A door that was forced with the opener after it broke, which bends track and sections.
What to expect during the visit
- The call. Tell us what you see and hear. A photo helps. Typical arrival across the metro is about an hour.
- Inspection. The whole door is checked: springs, cables, drums, rollers, tracks, hinges, opener and the safety reverse.
- The price before the work. You hear what’s broken, what’s optional, and the exact price before anything is taken apart.
- The repair. Parts are matched to your door, the door is balanced and the opener force and travel are reset.
- Testing and invoice. The door is run in front of you, and you get a written invoice with the 1-year labor warranty.
While you wait for the technician
- Don’t keep pressing the opener button. It strips gears and bends a door that’s already in trouble.
- Keep kids, pets and cars clear of the door.
- If the car must come out and the door is closed with a broken spring, don’t lift it by hand. Wait for help.

FAQ
Can a garage door be fixed the same day?
Usually, yes. Springs, cables, rollers, sensors and most opener problems are fixed the same day with parts carried on the truck. New doors are ordered and installed on a scheduled day.
Do I need to be home during the repair?
Someone should be there at the start to approve the price and at the end to see the door working and get the invoice.
How long does a new garage door installation take?
Most of a day for removing the old door, installing the new one with new track and springs, and connecting the opener. See new door cost in Minnesota.
Door stuck right now?
