Every fall, the same story: the first single-digit night arrives, and the phone fills with calls about doors that groan, strain, or simply quit. Cold doesn’t break garage doors — it exposes what was already worn. An hour of attention in October prevents most of December’s emergencies. Here’s the checklist Twin Cities techs actually use.
The Pre-Winter Checklist
- Listen and watch a full cycle. Grinding, popping or jerky travel in October becomes a no-start in January.
- Test the balance. Pull the red release cord and lift the door halfway by hand — it should stay put. A door that slams down or flies up has spring tension problems, and cold makes tired springs snap.
- Lubricate the moving parts. Silicone or garage-door lube on springs, rollers, hinges and the opener rail — never WD-40 alone, which strips grease. Cold thickens old lubricant into glue.
- Check the cables by eye. Fraying or rust near the bottom brackets means call a tech — never touch these under tension.
- Inspect the bottom seal and weatherstripping. A supple seal keeps out snowmelt and won’t freeze the door to the slab; a cracked one does both.
- Test the safety sensors and auto-reverse. Block the beam — the door should refuse to close; place a 2×4 flat under the door — it should reverse on contact.
- Tighten the hardware. A season of vibration loosens track and hinge bolts; five minutes with a socket wrench quiets half the rattles.
