You press the button, the opener lights come on, you hear the motor hum – and the door does not move an inch. This is one of the most common calls David takes across Minneapolis, St. Paul and the suburbs, and the good news is that the hum itself is useful information: the opener has power and the motor is trying. The problem is somewhere between the motor and the door. Here is how David works through it on a driveway, from the simplest fix to the one that needs a new part.
1. The trolley is disconnected (the red cord was pulled)
Look up at the rail. The carriage that pulls the door is called the trolley, and the red emergency-release cord hangs from it. If that cord was pulled – during a power outage, by a kid, by a broom handle, or by a tall vehicle – the trolley is now sliding along the rail without grabbing the door. The motor hums, the chain or belt moves, and the door sits there.
The fix is free: with the door fully closed, pull the cord toward the door (or straight down on some models) until you hear the trolley click, then run the opener once. It will pick the door up on the next cycle. If the trolley will not re-engage, the release lever or the trolley itself is worn, which is a quick part on our opener repair visit.
2. The drive gear is stripped
This is the classic hum. Chain-drive and older belt-drive openers turn the chain through a plastic worm gear inside the motor head. After fifteen or twenty years – sooner if the door is heavy or the spring is out of balance – the teeth wear off. The motor spins, the gear does not grab, and you get a hum with no movement. The giveaway is white or yellow plastic shavings on top of the motor housing or on the floor under it.

3. A spring is broken and the opener cannot lift the door
A garage door weighs 150 to 400 pounds. The opener is not built to lift that – the torsion spring does the lifting and the opener just guides it. When a spring snaps (you may have heard a loud bang from the garage), the opener suddenly has the whole door on its shoulders. Older openers hum and strain and go nowhere; newer ones stop after a few inches and flash the lights because their force protection kicks in.
Look above the door for the spring on the shaft: a broken torsion spring shows a clear gap of an inch or two in the coil. If you see it, stop using the opener – forcing it strips the gear (problem 2) and can bend the top section. This is a spring replacement, typically $150-$350 in the Twin Cities, done the same day. 4. The door is frozen to the floor or physically stuck
In a Minnesota winter this is the first thing David checks before anything else. Meltwater freezes the bottom rubber seal to the slab, or a snow ridge builds up under the door. The opener hums, the door will not break free, and after a few tries the opener gives up. Do not keep pressing the button – you will tear the seal or strip the gear. 5. The capacitor or motor
If the hum is more of a low buzz, the chain does not move at all, and the door is not frozen, the start capacitor inside the motor head may have failed. The motor gets power but cannot start turning. On a newer opener this is a cheap part; on an older one David will price the repair against a replacement so you are not putting money into a motor that is near the end anyway. This is the least common of the five, which is why it is last.
A quick diagnosis you can do in two minutes
- Pull the red cord and lift the door by hand. If it is very heavy or will not budge, the problem is the spring, a frozen seal or the track – not the opener.
- Door lifts easily by hand? Then the door is fine and the opener is the problem: trolley, gear or capacitor.
- Plastic shavings on the motor? Stripped gear.
- Loud bang earlier, gap in the spring coil? Broken spring – stop using the opener.
- Below freezing outside? Check the bottom seal before anything else.
Whatever you find, do not keep cycling the opener. Every extra attempt with a broken spring or frozen door eats the gear, and a $150 spring job turns into a spring plus a gear.
